Childproofing Sliding Doors 101

If you have small children or pets in your home, childproofing is an important task you need to do. Through childproofing the different areas, furniture and appliances in your home, you would not only be able to ensure the safety of your children and your pets but you would also prevent the structure, furniture and appliances in your home from getting broken or damaged.

One of the most important parts of your home which should not forget to childproof would be your doors, particularly your sliding doors. This is primarily because sliding doors may be a little easier to open and close compared to other types of doors. Additionally, because sliding doors are often made with glass, small children and pets can easily run into them, thinking that they are open. Here are some of the things you can do to childproof the sliding doors in your home.

First off, you need to look for a type of lock which is specifically made for securing sliding doors. Most locks that come with sliding doors can easily be opened even by toddlers so adding another lock system that is more sophisticated would be able to prevent them from being opened easily. These secondary lock systems can also be installed at a height that would be hard for children to reach. Additionally, installing a secondary lock system can also make your home more secure from intruders and burglars.

You can also purchase a childproofing device that can be installed on sliding doors. These can be purchased from most baby stores or hardware stores and can be quickly set up to prevent doors from being slid easily.

To prevent your children and your pets from running right into the glass of your wardrobe sliding doors, you can also buy decals or window stickers that you can stick on to your sliding glass doors.

You can also install treatments such as curtains or blinds to keep sliding doors out of view and prevent children and pets from being interested in playing with them.

Through using one or several of these methods, you should be able to childproof your sliding doors properly, preventing any accidental injuries to your pets and children and damages to your doors.

The right way to use a bar sink faucet

If you wish you upgrade your bath, shower or your sink, there are various ways of going about it. You could replace the entire unit, and opt for cleaning and instant reinstallation of existing pipe work. The cheaper option to upgrading is to utilize the existing components, and really see them in a capacity that they are designed for. For some, this may be somewhat unpleasant and rather tasteless, although there are many different styles that can be created simply by using the correct components from the outset. As an example, a simple upgrade of a bar sink faucet can completely transform your bathroom and give the area a whole new look

A bar faucet is one that has a long neck and often curls over to ensure that the water flow is pumped straight back into the plumbing system. Installing such a faucet is incredibly simple, although can be time consuming when you are faced with several different other tasks that arise due to a need to complete this one. Learning the basic concepts of the installation of the faucet will bring about a new perspective to the way that other components are used efficiently. It is equally as wise to understand that this form of faucet can be extremely powerful for your décor, and so is able to supply much more water through the system. Because of this, your home will need to be assessed to ensure that the water flow has enough pressure to support this.

When adding a new faucet to any form of surfaces, you should understand how they are affixed through a hole in the counter or in the sink, and you will need to ensure that the water supply lines are connected to the drainage pipe. Of course, a bar faucet is safe from the drainage pull, as the supply lines of hot and cold water are needed to outsource the heat evenly. When the supply lines are numerous, it can make it difficult to determine which one is most needed. The only way to really decide is to measure from the threaded faucet to the supply valve. This will make it easier to choose the materials that are suitable for your home or work space.

You may find that a flexible braided line is a more suitable solution, as the plastic isn’t solid, and many would prefer an easier way of securing the plugs rather than a fiddly cutting job. With these lines, they can be cut to length rather easily, and are soft enough to be bent into any shape in order to fully secure the bar faucet and allow for the retaining nuts be tightened to the remaining faucet.

Once the bar faucet is fully secured onto the sink, you should now be in a position to turn the water back on and see how stunning your new toy looks amidst a newly decorated room that displays all the taste and decadence of your own creation while being useful too.

Fences DIY Project – Making a Gate

The gate, in most cases, is just a moveable section of fence. The gate doesn’t have to be of the same design as the fence. However, since it does get a workout, it must be sturdy.

Thought should be given as to which way the gate is to open. There are no hard and fast rules, so it is pretty much a judgment call.

Gates don’t have to match the rest of the fence but that is usually an easy way to go. Once you’ve decided on the design, follow these steps to building a simple gate:

1. Measure the distance between gate posts or between one gate post and whatever else the gate will be attached to.

2. Subtract 3/4-inch from this measurement to allow for gate swing.

3. Make a simple frame of this width from 2 x 4s. The height will probably be best if it’s even with the rest of the fence.

4. Diagonal bracing is important. It can be a 2×4 brace or a wire and turnbuckle brace. These are easy to install, and your home center will have them. The turnbuckle is good for later on if the gate starts to sag. A couple of quick turns will remove the sag. Whichever bracing is used, it should angle down toward the hinge side.

5. The same infill material used on the fence is nailed to the frame.

6. Install the hinges, using fasteners as long as possible without the points sticking out.

7. Install the latch.

Hopefully your gate will be swinging as long as you do.

Home Improvement Tips for Childproofing Your Home

Home Improvement Tips for Childproofing Your Home

Sometimes, with all the fuss on the cute little baby things, the more important stuff takes the backseat – stuff like making their home a childproof one for the safety and protection of their young ones. If you’re on the way to or already have kids, you don’t have to look far to get great home improvement tips on this matter. This article provides some smart and easy home improvement tips for childproofing your home.

Childproofing your home virtually means adapting a variety of systems that, together, create an environment that is child-friendly, as well as safe for everyone who resides in your home. When your young ones are still enjoying their early childhood or are toddlers, your main duty is to be vigilant in keeping them from touching, grabbing, and tasting and chewing dangerous items and elements around the house. You also have to be careful as kids in this stage are prone to climb, jump, or topple over without a care in the world, leading to accidents. The home improvement tips you should employ must be focused on these potential problems.

For one, you should install toddler gates at doorways, most especially at the top and bottom of stairways. Keep the front door closed at all times whenever you and your young ones are inside the house; toddlers are known to be quick – they could be right outside into the street with one blink of an eye. You should also enclose open deck railings with properly welded wire mesh. You can cut it with tin snips, nail or staple it in place, and file off sharp ends afterwards. If you have interior railings, acrylic sheets would do the trick. These home improvement tips can help keep your little ones safe while they walk around the house.

Entrances and exits aren’t the only things that should be locked properly. Toddlers are likely to touch outlets. In order to keep them away from harm, specifically accidental shock, replace reachable outlet covers with protective covers. You can put plastic outlet plugs to cover unused outlets. All around the house, sharp furniture, as well as edges, should be padded with foam tape.

Your outdoors should just be as protected as your indoors. If you have a swimming pool and other potential danger zones for small children, it would be best to halve these areas fenced. Outdoor play equipment should also be checked. If there are protruding bolts, the same should be cut off. Hard swing seats should be replaced with sturdy yet soft material, and slide steps should be placed with non-slip coating. These simple home improvement tips for childproofing the play area, along with your vigilance and constant supervision, are sure to keep your precious ones out of harm’s way.
